As the IDE is the interface that is used for the hard disk drives; similarly the other type of the interface that is used is the SCSI. The abbreviation of the SCSI stands as Small Computer System Interface. The SCSI is pronounced as ‘Scuzzy’. The interface of the SCSI is used since ages to provide the interface for the hard disk drive. It can be considered as an alternative for the parallel ATA.

Also it can be again considered as an alternative for the old IDE which was used in the high end computers. Usually the normal interfaces have the possibility to connect a maximum of three devices. Generally three hard disk drives, or the CD drives and the DVD drives etc. But the interface of the SCSI can provide the advantage to connect even more than the normal range. In other words it is possible to connect more than three hard disk drives.

Another important advantage of using the SCSI interface for the hard disk drive is that it is much faster than the regular IDE interface. It may be possible that the hard disk drive is faster but the interface cannot match the speed often hard disk drive. Hence there is no use of the fast hard disk drive in such a situation where in the interface is slow.

The speed of the data transmission will remain same. The advantage relating to the SCSI is that the daisy chain of the various different peripherals can be formed. This can be done by utilizing a one host adapter and by utilizing only one slot in the bus.

A problem or a disadvantage with the SCSI is that it does not come along with the built in support in any of the computer systems. Therefore if the user is interested in the usage of the SCSI then the computer system should be converted in the format of the SCSI. For the purpose of these conversions, an adaptor card is used.

The host adapter card is generally available along with the two controllers. These controllers can be used to support several peripherals. Around 30 such different peripherals can be used with the host adapter card. This host adapter was first introduced by the Company named as the Shugart Associates. The development was in the year of 1986.

An interesting fact is that the RAID was also originally a SCSI. Until the year of 1990 the SCSI hard disk drives were the only ones that were utilized in the configuration and the implementation of the RAID. The implementation of the RAID improved the fault tolerant capacity of the system. The RAID technology was used to implement the server that are reliable and can provide better fault tolerance.

It is also used in the SAN – Storage Area Networks, Servers and the Mainframes also the NAS etc. Usually the Serial ATA or more popular known as the SATA is generally used in the computers rather than the SCSI. But the SCSI has evolved itself as a better interface. The new technologies always come around in the market. With the advent of the USB – Universal Serial Bus the other types of the interfaces are losing the market base. The SCSI can also be used as an interface for the CD drives and the Zip drives other than the hard disk drives.
