Quantum Hard Disk Drives
Quantum Corporation is the leading storage supplier for desktop, hard disk drives, tape drives, network attached storage appliances, solid state systems, hard disk drive applications for consumer electronics systems. Quantum is leading supplier of hard disk drives. Quantum became the first company to issue tracking stock, which track the separate performance of the company's DLT and Storage Systems and Hard Disk Drive businesses.
Quantum's Fireball drive is very similar in appearance and design to other hard disks in the Quantum Fireball range. The Quantum Fireball family is developing electrical faults for unique mechanical problems too. A regular knocking sound is heard from the hard disk when the drive is powered on. The drive will not be recognized in the BIOS. Data Recovery possibilities: Notoriously difficult drives to recover when they've developed mechanical problems, it is important that as soon as these drives begin to malfunction they are powered down and not used any further.
This is quite possible, they are still prone to all the other problems hard disks suffer from electrical failure, logical failure, bad sectors etc. SCSI gives simultaneous access of several hard disk drives at once and has the ability to support many more drives, upto 15 depending on the card you have.
Quantum hard disk can accesses 1 drive per channel at a time and only two drives can be connected to a channel, and can support only 4 channels. ltra ATA 66 IDE cable with the Light Blue connector uses the same standard 4-pin Molex power connection but now uses a 80-pin data/control signal cable. 40 of the leads being paired and grounded at one end to prevent ground isolation loop from occurring.
This pairing of the 40 leads reduces the signal interference between the cables and hence allows for quicker settling times. It is this reduced settling time, now half, that gives the increased data rate that is along with the increase in rpm. We as said do purchase Seagate hard disk drives, but if that were not the case would happily purchase Maxtor or Quantum drives. They give similar test results. But then who is to say that the drive you purchase, from which ever manufacturer is going to be manufactured and give the best results.
You could get one that gives slightly poorer results, as one must remember there are manufacturing tolerances and a batch of say ten apparently identical drives will give slightly different results. An important point with these high speed hard disk drives is that you must ensure that they are adequately cooled. Make sure you bolt your hard disk drive securely to your computer case as the metal computer case acts as a heat sink.
Also make sure that you fit it in such a place that there is adequate ventilation around the drive that it is not packed tightly to any other drives you may have. If in doubt provide a supply of air by using a small fan. And of course make sure that it is mounted either vertically or horizontally as per the manufactures instructions. On this important matter of cooling you might want to take a look at our Case cooling section for more information on PC cooling.
Thus, the Quantum hard disk is one of the leading marketing producers of the hard disk drives, many research is being carried out in order to make the drive even more sophisticated in order to provide fast retrieve and storage capacity.
