Laptop Hard Disk Drives

The laptop is a device that is invented and popularly used for the purpose of convenience and the mobility of the user. It is an extremely handy device that is used for the purpose of mobile computing. Almost all the peripherals that are present in the Desktop Computer are present in the Laptop Computer. The difference is that all the peripherals are smaller and compact than the Desktop Computer. The Laptop hard disk drive is also one such component in the Laptop that is used similarly to the one inside a Desktop Computer.

The physical size of the laptop hard disk drive is very small in comparison with the Desktop Computer’s hard disk drive. The laptop hard disk drives are available in the memory sizes starting from 10 GB to presently 120 GB. In the future it is also expected that the storage capacity of the hard disk drive may increase further. The physical size of the hard disk drive matters a lot in the laptop or notebook computer systems.

It is also possible to connect the laptop hard disk drive to the Desktop computer system. Usually the laptop hard disk drive is connected to the laptop through an IDE/ATA connector. The interface of the laptop hard drive is more compact.

The hard disk from the notebook computers when connected to the Desktop should have a compatible data cable bus and the compatible power supply. There are converters or the adaptors usually available for the purpose of attaching a device where it is not much compatible. The laptop hard disk drive has a 44 pin connector. The 40 pins of the connector are similar to the data bus.

The rest of the 4 pins are used for the following as described. The pin 41 is used for the +5 volts of power, the pin 42 is used for the +5 volts motor, the pin 43 is used as ground and the pin 44 is a reserved pin. The connectors used in the laptop hard disk drive are similar to the SCSI connectors and employs the SCA – Single Connector Attachment scheme that is used similarly in the SCSI. The platter size in the hard disk drive is different depending upon the different physical sizes of the laptop hard disk drives.

The physical sizes of the laptop hard disk drive starts from 2 ½ “ onwards. The laptop hard disk drive manufacturers supply the hard disk drives to the laptop assembler who in turn utilizes the hard disk drives. The major hard disk drive manufacturers are the Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, etc. The major laptop manufacturers are the DELL, IBM, HP, Acer and many more.

There are usually two methods of installation of the hard disk drives; the first method is called as the proprietary installation and the second method is called as the open or removable installation. The laptop hard disk drives are also available for the USB drives.

The laptop hard disk drives are flat and thin and are very compact. In the first method of installation the user is not supposed to the touch the hard disk drive. The second method is obvious with the name itself. It is possible to the remove the hard disk drive.

The first method usually uses the IDE/ATA interface for the connections. Presently the modern laptops employ the second method of installation that is open or removable method.
