Hard Disk Drives for RAIDThe hardware that is mostly used in the RAID is the RAID controller and the hard disk drives only. The hard disk drives are used normally for the RAID implementation. The only difference that resides is that there is more than one hard disk drive that is used in the implementation of the RAID. The RAID implementation is different at the different levels of the RAID. The use of particular software may also be required. The software may be the device driver that is being used for the RAID. The hardware is some what an essential issue as far as the RAID is concerned. The main reason for the implementation of the RAID is the reliability and fault tolerance. The RAID is actually a technology that is used for the implementation of the servers that can be considered as reliable and fault tolerant. In case of the implementation of the RAID there is more than one hard disk drive that is used in the computer system. There is controller card that is used as the RAID controller in case of the implementation of the RAID server. There are also many levels of the RAID like the RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 2, RAID 3, RAID 4 and RAID 5, RAID 6. The different RAID’s can be combined together to form a new level like for example the RAID 0+1 or RAID 01. The SCSI RAID is also available. Similarly the interfaces can be used like the SATA RAID and the PATA RAID. RAID has the hardware devices like the RAID controller only. Since the primary purpose of the RAID is to provide a fault tolerant system and also a reliable system; therefore there should be some technique involved to deal with the failure of one or more hard disk drives. if there is a failure of the hard disk drives then that may result in failure of the server. Hence in the RAID systems a concept of hot swapping is considered. The other names that are used to represent the hot swapping are the disk swapping and also the drive swapping. The principle involved is that if any of the hard disk drive fails then to change that hard disk drive even with out switching off the power supply. There are also different types of swapping. One is called as the hot swapping, the other as the warm swapping and lastly the cold swapping. In the hot swapping; if the hard disk drive fails then the thing is to replace that hard disk drive with out switching off the computer system. What happens in the warm swap is that the hard disk drive is not switched off but the user processes that are involved as stopped. The cold swap is the normal process of replacing the hard disk drives. These techniques are important in relation to the RAID since the RAID should provide reliability in spite of any hard disk drive failure. Another concept that is used in the RAID is the hot sparing. The concept is just to use a spare hard disk drive for the purpose of providing the backup in case of any disk failure. Number of hard disk drives that are used in the implementation of the RAID depends upon the different levels of the RAID. The different levels of the RAID have different number of hard disk drives. A connector called as SCA is also used in the RAID systems. |
