| Hard Disk Data Transmission | ||
Data Transfer in Hard Disk DrivesThe main purpose of providing a secondary storage device like the hard disk is to store the data efficiently. When the data is stored or retrieved the question of the data transfer pops up. What is the principle of data transmission in the hard disk drive? The Data transmission in the hard disk drive is an important part of the computer operations. The data transmission may be over the network between many computer systems, or else there may be many forms of the data transfer. They may be machine to machine data transfer. Machine to storage media; like form the hard disk drive to the floppy disk or the optical disk like the CD’s and the DVD’s etc is also possible. In case of the hard disk drives the data transmission rate is quite better than the other storage devices. The data access rate is also much better in the hard disk drive. The cost or the price factor in any hard disk drive is dependent on several factors. One among them is also the data transfer or the data transmission. The data transfer rates in the hard disk drives are usually measured with the unit called as the revolution per minute. This unit is in accordance with the rotating Disk Platter in the hard disk drive. The revolutions that the hard disk’s platter make per minute is considered as the basis for measuring the data transmission speed in the hard disk drive. The other factors over which the cost or the price of the hard disk drive is dependent include the storage capacity in terms of the memory and the physical size. Usually the external hard disk drives with the casing are more costly than the internal hard disk drives. Consider the examples of the data transmission rate in the present generation’s hard disk drives. The data transmission rate of 5600 rpm is considered as the normal for any hard disk drive. The lower transmission rates in the hard disk drives were also there in the earlier hard disk drives like the 3200 rpm etc or even lower than that. The usual hard disk drive that is used in most of the computer systems today is the hard disk with the rpm of 7200. The specific name given the hard disk having the data transmission speed of 7200 rpm by the major manufacturer of the hard disk drives that is the Seagate is ‘Barracuda’. The other faster data transmission rate of 10000 rpm is also available in the hard disk drives. The Seagate calls the hard disk as the ‘Cheetah’ drive. The hard disk with the faster rpm rates should be used if the storage capacity of the hard disk drive is also more. Suppose a hard disk drive with the storage capacity of 200 giga bytes is used in a computer. And the associated rpm is lower say 5600 rpm; then to search the files in the entire hard disk it may require a more time. Hence as the storage capacity of the hard disk drive increases the data transfer speed of the hard disk drive should also increase. The data transmission rate of the hard disk drive also decides the read and writes speeds of the data over the hard disk drive. The rate of transfer of the data over different storage device is also dependent on the internal speed of disk. |
