In contrast the technology today’s modern hard disk drives; have a large storage capacity and also a fairly high speed. The reliability of the data has also increased comparatively. The efficiency of the hard disk drives has also suitably increased. The hard disk drives are also capable of supporting the different configurations of the computer systems. The storage capacity that is available in the hard disk drive presently is about 500 GB. It was a time when the hard disk drive had a data capacity in terms of just Megabytes. The speed of the hard disk drive has also shot up; and it around 10,000 rpm. Also the hard disk drives that are presently available have the option of portability. This means that the data can be freely shifted to the other systems even without the availability of the network. The data transfer that was usually done with the floppy disks and the CD’s can now be done with the hard disk drives. This is done with the help of the external hard disk drives. The external hard disk drives currently come along with the USB support and they have the high storage capacities as well. The connectivity can also be provided with the help of other connectors like the Firewire etc. The hard disk drives that are external come along with the casing, which provides support to it. The hard disk drive is an essential part of the computer systems presently and the storage of the data for the back up makes it a responsible part in the organization. The hard disk drives that are external are also used for the storage of the data. The advent of the technologies in the connectors has made the hard disk drives to survive in any given environment. Presently many interfaces support the hard disk drive like the SCSI, ATA/IDE etc. The technologies like the RAID can also be implemented using the hard disk drives. The portable pocket hard disk drives are also the available. One such example for the portable hard disk drives is the Seagate’s Pocket Hard Disk. Also the future generation hard disk drives are the chips that utilize the nano technology for the storage media. The application of such storage media will be a reality in the coming generations. For example the hard disk drive from the IBM is ‘Millipede’. The Millipede is not yet launched but it is based on the nano technology and utilizes the concept of MEMS that is the Micro Electrical Mechanical System. The Millipede has a storage capacity of 1TB. In future it is also possible to have some other type of hard disk drive that has more capacity and even better reliability. There are many different models of the hard disk drives that are presently available with the different manufacturers. The most widely used hard disk drives in the computer are from the manufacturers like the Seagate, Quantum, Maxtor, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba and still many more. The hard disk drives are also presently available for different interfaces. It is also possible for the different hard disk drives of the various interfaces to be combined to form a realization. |
